Remember, I was now in my 20s and had lived a bit.Īround 1998 i used to check a message board that was extremely basic, but whoever ran it seemed to either live in LA or was friends with someone in or close to the band. The second was I had grown to appreciate how he fit in really well with what the other guys were about. When it was announced that John was returning, I was psyched for two reasons: the first that John wasn’t dead since he looked really fucking strung out for a while. I figured he was skilled enough to dial back the heavy stuff and groove the boys. Now, my second favorite band at the time was Jane’s Addiction, so when I heard Dave was taking over, I was excited. To me, he had a dream job and walked away. At my young age, I didn’t understand what he was going through and the shit he was dealing with. To be honest, I was pretty annoyed at John for ducking out on the tour. I appreciated John’s playing, but I also knew that the band existed before (I really loved Uplift and it’s still one of my favorite albums). The rhythm section of any band had to be incredible or I wasn’t into the band. I fell in love with RHCP during Mother’s Milk and BSSM, but I really focused so much on Chad (I was a budding drummer in my teens) and flea. I got see them live on that tour (Sept 2003) and they were probably close to their peak musically. Though it lacked their energy and the promise of faster punk songs. When BTW came out I was disappointed, it sounded great and they had enhanced their songwriting. We got hear bootlegs of Fortune Faded (the original, better chorus) and Universally Speaking, then Don’t Forget Me later in the year. In May of 2001, it was reported they began working on a new album and were writing faster punk rock influenced stuff. By the time the US tour hit,he regained his chops (listen to Off The Map). ![]() The production was similar to BSSM, for the fact it sounded live. My first impressions (Californication) was “wow”, John was playing a minimalist style but the melodies were incredible. ![]() I had no idea they had an album coming out until early May. I got BSSM in February and then picked Californication up on the release date. ![]() I had just gotten into the Peppers around January 1999, so as you can tell it was a perfect time.
